Derek was a remarkable historian, who overcame so many difficulties, producing nine articles for THS Bulletins. He won the Woodard Award three times, once in collaboration with the late Bill Camp but the others in partnership with his late wife, Cath.

Born in Birmingham, he arrived in Tewkesbury in World War II and his parents were among the first who were forced, through the national housing shortage, to live in former POW camp huts in Northway. He was educated at Northway and the Council Secondary Schools and worked as a bricklayer for most of his life - this ensured he had a deep interest in local buildings, but it was Cath who patiently wrote his articles at his dictation. For many years, he suffered from a debilitating illness, but he was passionate in supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in honour of his grandfather, Frank Price, killed at Arras in 1917.
