Deeds and Occupiers
Terms
- appurtenance: an accessory or other item associated with a particular activity or style of living.
- messuage: a dwelling house with outbuildings and land assigned to its use.
- moiety: each of two parts into which a thing is or can be divided.
- Burgess: A freeman in a medieval town holding a burgage.
- Burgage: A tenure in which burgesses or townsfolk held lands or tenements of the lord, usually for a fixed rent within an ancient borough. The property could be mortgaged, sold or bequeathed.
- Freemen: There are three meanings to this word:
- a man who was free of trade taxes and who shared in the profits of the borough in which he lived and traded,
- a tenant who was free of feudal service and
- a man who had served his apprenticeship and who could then work at his trade in his own right.
