(1) Will of John Lewis – 1st January 1741

In the name of God amen; I John Lewis of Tewkesbury in the County of Gloucester mason, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following: - that is to say;

First I give and devise unto my loving wife Mary - ALL THOSE MY TWO TENEMENTS or DWELLING HOUSES, and the brewhouse thereto adjoining situate in the Barton Street in Tewkesbury aforesaid, and now in the possession of William Newman and Thomas Crump as tenants to me, for and during her natural life; and from and after her Decease then I give and devise the same tenements or dwelling houses and brewhouse unto my daughter Susannah Lewis and to her heirs forever

But in case my said daughter shall happen to dye in the lifetime of my said wife, then I will is, and I give and devise the said tenements or dwelling houses and the brewhouse unto my wife Mary and to her heirs forever

Also I give and devise unto my said loving wife Mary - ALL THAT MY MESSUAGE or TENEMENT called THE GLOBE INN situate in the Barton Street - to hold and enjoy the same, and to receive the rents and profits thereof (subject to the estate and interest my father-in-law William Woodward hath therein for his life) for and during and until such time as my said daughter Susanna shall arrive at the age of 21 years - and then

I give and devise the same Messuage or Tenement unto her my said daughter Susanna and to her heirs and assigns forever.

But in case of my said daughter's death before she arrives at the age of 21 years then I give and devise the said Messuage or Tenement unto my said loving wife Mary and her heirs forever

And Also I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Mary the Income of the Principal sum of £20 (being money lodged in the hands of Nathaniel Jeynes of Tewkesbury IN TRUST for me) until such time as my said daughter shall arrive to the age of 21 years; and at such time I give and bequeath the same sum of money unto my said daughter Susanna

But in case of my said daughter's death before she comes intitled to her said legacy of £20 then I give and bequeath the same unto my said loving wife Mary for her use and benefit

Also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Susanna my Silver Tankard but my Will is that my loving wife shall have the use of it until my said daughter comes to the age of 21 years

And also I give and bequeath unto William Mason of Tewkesbury maltster my Silver Watch and Best Suit of Cloaths [sic]

And all other my Household Goods and Personal Estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Mary - to hold and enjoy the same for her use and benefit during her life and from and after her decease I give and bequeath the same unto my said daughter Susanna

And I do hereby constitute and appoint my said loving wife Mary sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all Wills by me at any time heretofore made
